European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
