Senate Approves Measure to Release Epstein Files

The upper chamber of Congress on this Tuesday gave swift approval to a measure that will mandate the disclosure of official records concerning the late pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, following a almost unanimous vote in the lower house and a shift by the president and his GOP allies. Trump's team relented after months of trying to block the bipartisan effort involving a case that has plagued the president since his return to the White House.

Unanimous Passage in Congress

Senators proceeded by general agreement, which needs acceptance from each senator but avoids a individual voting process, expediting the process. Just before, the House overwhelmingly approved the bill on a massive majority.

Citizens have endured sufficient delay. The survivors have suffered long enough,” the top Senate Democrat stated in a floor speech on Tuesday, before urging the chamber to pass it unanimously. “Let the truth come out. Ensure full disclosure.”

Future Action

This legislation next heads to the president for his approval. Trump stated on the previous day that he would sign the measure.

Even though the president has for months downplayed the controversy over the authorities' approach of the scandal as a “false narrative”, he signalled his support for the measure over the weekend, and announced he would approve it if it comes to him.

Response

The Democratic party, along with victims and their supporters who were watching from a viewing area, broke into applause after the bill was passed. The only opposition came from a Louisiana Republican, who said he was concerned the measure would reveal personal information of individuals involved, persons of interest and others involved in the investigation.
