Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he was staying under confinement pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" came to light.

This involved seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a invitation to a demonstration that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the detention, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the protest called by his child.

His son, Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a assembly of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on social media on the previous day: Will you battle for your homeland, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could offer prayers for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the chance of the former president's transfer to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the probes revealed a record of organizing to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around 8 miles from the former president's residence.

International Reactions

The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist American leader Donald Trump, causing him to enact a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.

Bolsonaro is being detained in a national police facility in Brasilia and will experience a detention review on the next day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that he be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he demanded ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was convicted of orchestrating a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the presidential race to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plot which encompassed plans to murder the current president and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing the former president's case.

The conspiracy was stopped because it didn't receive the support of the army and air force commanders. His successor was sworn in without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, numerous his backers stormed and vandalised official structures in the national capital, the capital city.

The law enforcement took action and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been encouraged by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the moment, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
