In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The September revolt was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Political Consultations Underway
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
